The Tampere Conservatory composition class was launched at the turn of the millennium under Jouni Kaipainen, when Ilari Laakso was Rector. The contemporary music ensemble TampereRaw was established around the same time.
The opening concert of the Tampere Biennale this year pays tribute to the vitality of a tradition of contemporary music in Tampere while celebrating the importance of cooperation between composers, performers and educators. When the roots are healthy, plants spring up nurtured by warmth and by the cycle of light and darkness.
