The theme linking the works in this exhibition is trees: trees as individuals, the myths about them in various cultures, the state of the world’s forests, the political nature of the theme, increasing drought and the planting of trees as a silent act of resistance. Finnish public debate on forests often highlights two opposing views: On the one hand, forests are the foundation of our economic growth, but on the other hand we have chopped down too much of them, turning forests from carbon sinks into emission sources in addition to our other climate emissions.

The purpose of this exhibition at the Tampere Biennale is to broaden the horizons of the forest debate. What if there were no longer a forest but only a single tree? Composers Riikka Talvitie, Leevi Räsänen and Teemu Mastovaara contribute to the exhibition.
